Nursery & 4+ FAQS

What is the 4+ exam?

This is an exam taken by 3 to 4 year olds in January in the hope of getting an offer from the selective school of their choice for a place in Reception class in September of the same year.

I want my daughter to sit the 4+ exam in January. When should I enrol her onto the 4+ Maths Programmes?

Ideally, April in the Summer Term. This will enable her to complete the 2-term 4+ Maths Programmes by December, in readiness for taking the 4+ assessments in January. However, she could join at any time as long as she qualifies by the entry assessment.

My daughter is not sitting a 4+ exam. Will she gain from the 4+ Maths Programme?

Absolutely. The programme deals with topics which are accessible to 2-4 year olds; introduces them to maths in a fun and enjoyable way, helps to extend their attention span and should lay a firm foundation for success in maths at reception and beyond.

My child cannot enrol at a centre. Is it possible to purchase the materials instead?

Yes. A package of colourful, easy to use 4+ Maths booklets is available. It is £80 per term consisting of 12 booklets for a term. Please come to a centre to pay and collect.

I want my daughter to enrol on to the 4+ Language Sense Programme. When should we do this?

The Language Sense Programme is for fluent readers who have completed the Reading Programme.  Your daughter should learn to read first on the Reading Programme.  We accept children to the Reading Programme from 3½ years.  We also take younger children in one-to-one tuition.  Enrol your daughter in September of the Autumn Term, or January in the Spring Term. This will enable her to complete the 3-term Reading Programme in readiness for taking the 4+ assessments the following January. 


Reception & 5+ FAQs

What is the 5+ exam?

This is an exam taken by 4 to 5 year olds in January in the hope of getting an offer from the selective school of their choice for a place in Year 1 in September of the same year.

I want my son to sit the 5+ exam next January. When should I enrol him onto the 5+ Language Sense and Maths Programmes?

Ideally, April in the Summer Term. This will enable him to spend the Summer and Autumn Terms completing the two-term 5+ Language Sense and Maths Programmes, finishing up in December, before the 5+ exam season starts in January. 

My son cannot read fluently yet. How should we prepare?

It is essential that he is a fluent reader by the time the 5+ assessment comes up.  We advise that you enrol your child on to the Reading Programme as early as possible.  The Reading Programme is a 3-term course.  We take children from as young as 3½ years. Children younger than 3½ can be taught in a one-to-one setting.  

Following the Reading Programme, your son can start the 5+ Language Sense Programme.

Year 1 & Pre-7 FAQS

When should I enrol my son onto the Pre-7+ Maths Programme?

If your son is in Year 1 or Year 2, enrol him at the start of a term (September, January or April). Your child should stay for 3 terms at this level. This will enable him to complete the 3-term programme. However, he could join at any other time as long as he qualifies by entry assessment.

What about enrolling my son onto the Pre-7+ Language Sense Programme?

If your son is in Year 1 or Year 2, as with the Maths Programme, enrol him at the start of a term (September, January or April) and plan on staying for 3 terms at this level. This will enable him to complete the 3-term programme.  He could, however, join at any other time as long as he qualifies by entry assessment.


Year 2 & 7+ FAQS

What is the 7+ exam?

This is an exam taken by 6 to 7 year olds in January in the hope of getting an offer from the selective school of their choice for a place in Year 3 in September of the same year.

When should I enrol my daughter onto the 7+ Language Sense and Maths Programmes?

Enrol at the start of a term (September, January or April). Your child should stay for 3 terms at this level. This will enable her to complete the 3-term programme. However, she could join at any other time as long as she qualifies by entry assessment. It is recommended that she also attends the Leaders are Readers Summer School in order to revise all work done in previous terms and make good use of the time available during the long summer break to prepare for the exams.

My son is not sitting a 7+ exam. Will he benefit from the 7+ Maths Programme?

Absolutely. The programme deals with topics which are accessible to 6-8 year olds and lays a firm foundation for success in maths at Key Stage 2 (from Year 3) and beyond.

My child cannot enrol at a centre. Is it possible to purchase the materials instead?

Yes. A package of colourful, easy to use 7+ Maths booklets is available. It is £80 per term consisting of 10 to 12 booklets for a term. Please come to a centre to examine, pay and collect.


Year 3 & Year 4 FAQS

When should I enrol my daughter onto the Year 4 Pre-11+ Maths Programme?

Enrol at the start of a term (September, January or April). Your child should stay for 3 terms at this level. This will enable her to complete the 3-term programme. However, she could join at any other time as long as she qualifies by entry assessment.

What about when to enrol onto the Year 4 Pre-11+ Language Sense Programme?

Again, enrol at the start of a term (September, January or April), and plan to stay for 3 terms at this level. This will enable her to complete the 3-term programme. As with the Maths Programme, she could join at any other time as long as she qualifies by entry assessment.


Year 5 to 9 & 11+ FAQS

What is the 11+ exam?

This is an exam taken by 10 to 11 year olds in Autumn and Spring Term of Year 6 in the hope of getting an offer from the selective school of their choice for a place in Year 7 in September.

I want my Year 5 daughter to sit the 11+ exam when she gets into Year 6 Autumn Term. When should I enrol her onto the 11+ Programme?

Enrol her in the Autumn Term, Spring Term or Summer Term.  Enrolling her in the Autumn Term of Year 5 is the ideal, as this will enable her to complete the three terms by July, helping her to be prepared for the highly competitive grammar schools' 11+ exams when she starts Year 6 in the Autumn Term, and for the independent schools' 11+ exams in the Spring Term of Year 6.

Really, she could join at any time as long as she qualifies by entry assessment. If joining in the Spring Term (Term 2), or Summer Term (Term 3), it is highly recommended that she also attends the Leaders are Readers Summer School in order to cover all work done in Term 1 and to revise in depth before starting Year 6. Summer School has become even more necessary now that many schools require candidates to sit the11+ exams as soon as they begin Year 6. With Summer School, candidates making good use of the long summer break to prepare for the exams.

My son is not sitting the 11+ exam. Will he benefit from the 11+ Programme?

Absolutely. The programme deals with topics which are accessible to 10-11 year olds and should lay a firm foundation for success in maths, creative writing and comprehension for all those in Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7.  Students who take this course perform very well in Year 6 SATs and tend to get into the top sets in Year 7 and remain in top sets in later school years.
